Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) Treatment

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that blocks abnormal blood vessels in the knee to reduce inflammation and relieve chronic knee pain, especially in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

At Vein and Knee Pain Vascular Group, we use this NEW, innovative treatment for residual or secondary knee pain that persists even after other therapies. Chronic knee inflammation can lead to the growth of abnormal blood vessels, which irritate nerves and increase pain. GAE targets and blocks these vessels to relieve discomfort and improve mobility.

Minimally Invasive

Minimally Invasive

As a non-surgical alternative, GAE does not involve large incisions, removal of bone, or general anesthesia.

Outpatient Procedure

No need for overnight hospital stays, patients are discharged home just hours after their procedure.

Quick Treatment, Short Recovery

A typical GAE takes 45 to 90 minutes to complete, and most patients recover within a couple of days after treatment.

Long-Lasting Pain Relief

Studies show that GAE leads to significant pain reduction for several months, and in some patients can provide relief for one year or more.

Less Risky With Few Side Effects

As a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment, GAE is less risky compared to open surgery and does not have many side effects compared to medication.

How does Genicular Artery Embolization work?

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a non-surgical, image-guided procedure that targets and blocks abnormal arteries in the knee that contribute to chronic pain and inflammation.

Here’s how the GAE procedure works:

  • Local anesthesia is applied: You may feel a slight pinching sensation as the doctor numbs the skin, similar to having an IV placed, but in the leg instead of the arm.

  • No incisions are needed: The procedure is minimally invasive and designed to reduce discomfort.

  • A contrast dye is injected: This medical dye shows up on a live-motion X-ray (fluoroscopy), helping the doctor clearly see abnormal arteries around the knee.

  • Microscopic beads are used: Tiny, sterile beads, about the width of a human hair are injected to block these abnormal blood vessels. The beads are permanent and stop the abnormal blood flow that irritates surrounding nerves.

Why GAE Is Effective

  • Especially beneficial for patients with knee osteoarthritis and residual pain after treatments like viscosupplementation (gel injections)

  • Long-lasting relief, most patients don’t require additional treatments

  • Non-invasive, with no surgery or downtime

  • Helps reduce inflammation and nerve pain by targeting the source: abnormal arteries

GAE is a cutting-edge, highly effective option for treating persistent knee pain and offers hope for patients who haven’t found relief through other therapies.
